Nervous patients

At Sweet Smiles Dental Practice, we are experts when it comes to nervous patients. We understand, that for some people, a visit to the dentist can cause anxiety and stress. All our staff are fully trained and experienced in looking after, relaxing and reassuring nervous patients. We even operate a regular sedation clinic for those patients who feel too anxious to be treated using local anaesthetic.

  • Why Do I Need Sedation?

Sedation is an ideal way of helping you to relax if you are nervous about dental treatment or you are having a procedure which may cause discomfort or distress.

  • What Kind Of Sedation Will Be Used?

At Sweet Smiles Dental Practice we use Intravenous (IV) Sedation. IV Sedation is when a sedative is injected directly into a vein. If you are nervous about having dental treatment or you are having a procedure which may cause discomfort, IV sedation is an effective and safe treatment.

  • What Are The Benefits Of IV Sedation?

While under IV sedation, you will feel deeply relaxed but you will still be able to understand and respond to requests from the dentist. You will be unaware of the operation and this form of treatment is ideal for patients who wish to avoid the noise and vibration of the drill.

  • What Happens During IV Sedation?

An aneathsetist will place a thin plastic tube into a vein either in one of your arms or in the back of one of your hands. A drug will then be injected which will quickly make you feel very sleepy and relaxed. Throughout the procedure you will have a gadget clipped to your finger to measure your pulse and oxygen levels. Your blood pressure will be checked before and after the procedure. As well as IV sedation, you will be given a local anaesthetic. You will not be aware of being given the local anaesthetic because you will have it after you have received the IV sedation. The anaesthetic will be given by way of an injection into the gum surrounding the area that you are having treated and it is the same as the one given to patients having treatment carried out without sedation. The injection will take a couple of minutes to numb the area and it ensures that you will feel no pain during your treatment. The length of time you will be sedated varies depending on the treatment you are having.

  • What Happens After IV Sedation?

When the dentist has completed your treatment, you will need to stay in the surgery until you are considered ready to leave by the anaethsetist. Recovery usually takes about 10-15 minutes but can be longer in some cases. Once you have been discharged from the surgery, you will need to be escorted home by the person you have chosen as your responsible adult (someone over the age of 16) and they must supervise you for a period of 24 hours.

There are many dental procedures used to treat a variety of dental conditions. Knowing what to expect before, during, and after a procedure will help to make the experience go as smoothly as possible and possibly aide in the recovery afterwards.
